Sushi is well known everywhere now these days. Nigiri, Maki, there are different types of Sushi and you can find it nearly anywhere.
But there is a huge difference between what you usually can enjoy in Europe and what you get in Japan.
We usually (with rare exceptions) find very hard rice and too watery fish for premium prices. That's why we prefere to have our own sushi parties at home. Nigiri and maki are quite is a bit of work to prepare, but with "Temaki" we take the preparation and the fun to the table. Temaki means roll by hand. It looks gorgeous, it is easy to make and one wraps whatever one likes while having fun. This way, anybody can join food together, old and young, vegetarians, vegans, fish and meat eaters.
Basically prepare Sushi rice and all the items to be wrapped and sheets of nori. You don't necessarily need Sashimi fish, you also can prepare some grilled meat, canned tuna with mayonnaise, carrot stick, cucumber sticks, tamagoyaki or small salad leaves. If you have, also offer some herbs, we call it " Yakumi" in Japanese, such as Shiso (Japanese basil), rucola or cress sprouts, or Ume (pickled plum), it will give a nice taste accent.
One of the most liked temaki amongst our family is the oyakomaki (mother and child). It consist of a slice of salmon and salmon roe. It is especially tasty with japanese mayonese.
This time we served with carrot with fish egg as a side dish.
